ETHICAL REVOLUTION AS NIGERIA’S DEVELOPMENT DETERMINANT
Publication Authors:
 Tayo Raymond Ezekiel Eegunlusi
Year Published:

Abstract:
This work argues that the problem of extensive corruption in Nigeria necessitates an ethical revolution. As observed over decades, Nigeria is embroiled in and sinking deeper into the abyss of corruption and moral decadence such that its precarious situation appears irremediable. On numerous occasions, Nigerians have always identified the causes of the problem of corruption and offered solutions to the problem, giving the impression of being determined to solve it all together, to attain lasting development and national stability. However, it is unfortunate that they only pay lip service to tackle corruption. The conflict between their profession and actions amplifies while the nation sinks deeper into anarchy and serious developmental problems that cut across social, political, economic and religious lines. With the nation’s social institutions being mostly in crisis, being easily manipulated by self-interested people at the helm of the nation’s affairs to the detriment of the majority of the people, things worsen with each passing day. Using the methods of conceptual and historical analyses, this work reflects on the issues involving extensive corruption in Nigeria. Through doing this, it argues for ethical revolution as the panacea for dealing with corrupt practices in Nigeria.

Critical Reflections On Wiredu’s Consensual Democracy
Publication Authors:
 Tayo Raymond Ezekiel Eegunlusi
Year Published:
 2022
Abstract:
This paper argues that Kwasi Wiredu’s consensual democracy is an inadequate alternative to liberal democracy in contemporary Africa because it neglects the beliefs in supernatural realities underpinning governance and political decisions in traditional societies on the continent. The paper holds that as evident in their worldviews and activities, traditional Africans do not depersonalise entities or segregate physical realities from spiritual ones. Deploying historical and conceptual analyses, the paper contends that, essentially, the deficiency of Wiredu’s argument lies in his declining to acknowledge the roles oaths and covenants play in the sustenance of Africa’s traditional governance systems. The paper thus holds that Wiredu’s discountenancing of the role of beliefs in supernatural realities in African societies generally may have resulted in this gap in his understanding of indigenous African political thought and practice.

A Critique Of Traditional Igbo And Yoruba Moral Perspectives On Evil
Publication Authors:

Year Published:

Abstract:
Evil and its moral consequences are problematic as far as human societies are concerned, whether primitive or civilised. As humans experience or cope with the reality of evil in its various forms in daily existence, every cultural group finds ways of explaining and contending with it in its world view. Perspectives on the existence of evil are as real in Africa as they are in other parts of the world. Going by this, Africans have reflected on questions concerning what is evil culturally and religiously, both which cannot be detached from moral viewpoints on evil. Despite the influences of foreign cultures as Christianity and Islam, certain primordial convictions endured in Igbo and Yoruba cultures. As its objective, this article explores the moral issues arising from their traditional cultural perspective on evil, especially as relating to the existence of evil and moral responsibility. To achieve this objective, the article is woven around the following research questions: What are the distinctive Igbo and Yoruba traditional perceptions of evil in their world views? How do these affect considerations of moral responsibility? Methodologically, the paper applies philosophical argumentation and analysis in interrogation of the issues involved in its objectives.

Biblical Ethics And The Global Environmental Well-Being
Publication Authors:
 Eegunlusi, T.R.E. , Onyibor, M.I.S.
Year Published:
 2019
Abstract:
The pollution of the environment through anthropogenic activities is a global issue requiring a concerted effort from the global community, because of its negative effect on health, existential condition, and the survival of humanity. Regurgitating on this, this paper argues that biblical ethics, especially as based on the ideas of holiness, sanctification, the golden rule and communitarian existence, is significant in promoting global environmental wellbeing. It equally debates that the neglect of these ideas on which this ethics rests, or their being outrightly consigned to mere religiosity, contributes to global environmental problems. Exploring certain basic biblical texts, using conceptual and empirical approaches, the work argues for the importance of adopting biblical ethics in solving global environmental problems. For several centuries, variegated views and interpretations on the ideas of holiness, sanctification, brotherly kindness/fellow-feeling and shared existence, have been expressed in many texts, in relation to human conducts and relationships. This work examines the Judeo-Christian perspectives to these ideas. In assuming material and metaphysical dimensions, Judeo-Christian understanding emphasises relationships with God and men while stressing the necessity of responsive and responsible daily communal and other-regarding existence. Though modern minds attempt to divorce man from such metaphysical existence involving God on grounds of empirical justifications, this work seeks to examine the connecting point and the influence faith has in promoting ethics and the necessity of operating with the ideas emanating from faith enterprises to ensure global environmental order. Thus, this work maintains that giving adequate attention to the salient ideas of biblical ethics can promote healthy environment for mankind.

Anyiam-Osigwe’s (Holistic) Political Philosophy And The Niger
Publication Authors:

Year Published:
 2014
Abstract:

This paper adopts the basic tenets of Anyam-Osigwe’s holistic philosophy to examine the problems embedded in Niger-Delta’s post-amnesty programme and events. The Niger Delta area of Nigeria was a major boiling cauldron that threatened the nation’s peace, security, unity and sustenance until the militants from the region accepted the Federal Government’s conditions for post-amnesty. Up till that point, the gains of the nation were marred and it experienced plummeting local and international recognition and exacerbating economy, which added to its many problems that were compounded by high level institutional corruption and decadent leadership structure. Though the offer of amnesty constitutes a great step in achieving national development and promoting human rights, the modes of integrating the militants have been fraught with problems and irregularities. Thus, this paper contends that the defects of the Nigerian post-amnesty programme and some other methods of addressing insurgence in the Niger Delta region could fuel a resurgence of the conflict in the area, leading ultimately to negative consequences relative to the Nigerian State. As such, the paper advocates that giving adequate consideration to Osigwe’s holistic philosophy to human existence may create lasting peace in theregion and other parts of the Nigerian State.
