In the course of the Communication Skills project (COMSKIPTECH 1989 - 93) of the National Universities Commission (NUC/ODA-British Council, three sets of language teaching resource materials in Reading, Writing and Listening were produced. The materials development effort was in direct response to a felt need for appropriate materials for the Use of English programmes (EAP - EST) of the participating universities. This paper reports on the integrated Reading - Writing course that was designed in FUTA; the materials that were selected from the resource packs with the variety of tasks that made for a new methodology which enable our learners to learn together and alone. The course design, with the materials, was based on identified learner needs, teaching/learning context and target goals. The course and the materials selected also integrate both process and product approaches. The paper focuses on the trialing of the materials over a period of ten years. In describing the trialing experience, we focus on the range of classroom techniques and methodologies of getting the students to work, sometimes individually or in pairs and at other times collaboratively through micro-skills acquisition processes to produce, in the end, individually written term papers (a target goal) with a measure of writer responsibility and identity. Observed drawbacks in the materials and the rubrics are also brought out.
