Abstract:
This chapter presents insights from language use in the local building industry in Akure, a Yoruba speaking town. The data show that the craftspeople are engaged in language engineering and have devised technical jargon for use by carpenters and builders. The main vocabulary development strategies used are coinage, range extension and borrowing. Borrowed terms are usually integrated into Yoruba phonological patterns but the newer terms are usually aberrant in syllable structure. Terms earlier devised e.g. as recorded in Bibeli Mimo are either unknown or unwanted. The language used by building professionals suggest that appropriate /intermediate technology can be taught in the medium of the indigenous languages. It is therefore recommended that programmes such as the FUTA Craft Training Programme should be taught in indigenous languages for the achievement of two results: first it would help to domesticate science and re-invent technology as part of Nigerian culture; and second, it would enrich indigenous languages and provide its speakers with a two-way access to the modern world (Eastmann, 1983:31) while still lending a sense of identity through the use of the modern tongue.

Abstract:
This chapter investigates a Nigerian counter-example of the female silence, as assumed in the literature on ethnography of speaking. From an analysis of songs collected at three Èkìtì-Yorùbá weddings, the study shows that women are major participants at highly valued public speech events. In addition, the songs were found to be a site for radical commentary on social structure and women’s roles in Èkìtì-Yorùbá society and a means for transmitting mores and values. The study also contributes to the attempt to redress the Oyo-focussed bias in Yoruba studies by using Èkìtì-Yorùbá data.
